The church
of Saint-Catherine
Built on the site of an old 17h century church,
it was designed by the architects Poelaert and Jansse and
aims at originality through a mixture of various styles. The
collection of paintings makes the church worth visiting.
Taking up most of the Vismêt (Fish Market), Saint Catherines
Church was designed in 1854 by Joseph Poelaert. By his standards,
its really very small - he also designed the Gargantuan Palais
de Justice. The church still has the tower from the old 17th
century church, which was actually part of the towns first
fortified enclosure. Services in the chapel are held daily
at 8am and in the church on Sunday mornings at 10am.
